LED Advertising Trucks vs Vehicle Wrap Advertising: Brightness, Pixel Pitch, Costs and Uses

LED advertising truck and printed vehicle advertising on Hong Kong streets

“LED or vehicle graphics?” often draws vague answers about impact, affordability and night-time visibility. Useful decisions depend on numbers: minimum LED brightness, graphic lifespan and production's share of total cost at different hire lengths. This article compares published specifications and prices to give a practical dividing line.

1. The central difference: fixed or changeable content

LED advertising truck

High-brightness outdoor screens on one or more sides play MP4 videos or JPEG images. Their key value is that content can change the same day without reprinting physical materials. One vehicle can show opening details in the morning, discounts in the afternoon and countdowns at night. For vehicles and screen configurations, see LED advertising truck service page。

Printed vehicle advertising

Printed vinyl or wraps cover the body with static artwork. Their strength is coverage: the entire sides, rear and even roof can carry advertising. Distance recognition comes from area, with installed graphics potentially serving several years and events. For vehicles, see Mobile showroom truck and Mini promotional truck。

A simple decision rule

Choose LED if the message changes during the campaign; choose printed graphics for an unchanged message used for more than three weeks. The remaining comparisons develop this principle. For all vehicle types, see Five Vehicle Types Compared: A Selection Guide and LED advertising trucks versus mini promotional trucks。

2. Compare visual performance through specifications

Brightness: competing with sunlight

Brightness is critical for outdoor LED.Industry specifications commonly set 5,000 nits as the outdoor mobile LED minimum, with 5,000–6,500 typical and some manufacturers listing 7,000–8,000+. Displays below 4,000 nits may wash out in afternoon sun.

For context, indoor displays are generally 500–1,000 nits and home TVs 250–350, while a sunlit sky has a reference brightness around 6,500 nits. Lower ambient light makes the same vehicle more striking at night, when screens usually dim automatically to reduce glare. Ask for the actual vehicle's brightness specification when comparing quotes.

Pixel pitch and viewing distance: avoid paying for invisible detail

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between adjacent pixel centres. P4 means 4 mm. Smaller numbers give denser pixels and finer images, usually at higher cost and weight.

Pixel pitchSuggested viewing distanceApplication
P2.9–P3.9About 2–8 mStationary displays, close pedestrians and fine text
P4About 2.4–12 mPedestrian areas, event entrances and shopping-centre surroundings
P5About 4.6–18 mVersatile for pedestrians and roadside traffic
P6–P8About 9 m or moreWide main roads and fast-moving traffic

A common mismatch is paying for very fine pitch when viewers are across a road more than ten metres away and cannot see the extra detail.Establish viewing distance before choosing pitch.

Canvas size: the practical limitation

Common Hong Kong side screens are about 2.4 m high × 5.76 m wide, with rear screens around 2.4 × 2.24 m. Another configuration is 2.24 × 3.52 m at 560 × 880 pixels. Divide dimensions by pixels to check pitch: 3,520 mm ÷ 880 = 4 mm, or P4.

Remember: 560 × 880 pixels is smaller than many phone screenshots.Detailed desktop artwork can blur on the vehicle. Use one message per frame, large text readable from ten metres, strong contrast, no fine lines or pale small type, a fixed call to action and 15–30-second content loops.

Printed graphics' strength: area

Printed graphics are not constrained by an LED pixel grid. Recognition comes from coverage : sides, rear and roof can provide more area than a single screen. In daylight, at a distance or for large product photography, printed visuals can match LED's presence. Their main limitations are no self-illumination at night and fixed content once applied.

3. Costs: one-off physical production versus digital delivery

One-off vehicle graphic costs

Public Hong Kong printing and vehicle-graphics prices provide these references:

Vehicle and coverageSupplier ASupplier B
Van, left and right sides6,300 per vehicle5,500 per vehicle
Van, four sides6,800 per vehicle6,300 per vehicle
Four sides and roof: full vehicle8,500 per vehicle7,500 per vehicle
5.5-tonne truck, two sides—4,000 per vehicle
Fleet above ten vehicles, excluding roof5,000 per vehicle—
Mobile advertising truck, full vehicle15,000 per vehicle18,000 per vehicle

Some printers list matte vehicle vinyl around HK$36–44 per square foot. Design quotes range from about HK$1,800 for full-wrap artwork to a supplier's HK$4,800 general design fee, depending on scope. Another supplier lists printing and installation around HK$20,000.

Spreading the cost explains the dividing line

Using one supplier's public tiers—HK$4,500 daily from seven days, HK$3,500 from 14 days and HK$2,800 from 28—plus HK$4,800 design and HK$20,000 printing/installation:

Rental periodVehicle hire subtotalProduction costsAll-in totalProduction shareAverage all-in daily cost
7 days31,50024,80056,300About 44%About 8,043
14 days49,00024,80073,800About 34%About 5,271
28 days78,40024,800103,200About 24%About 3,686

This table explains the recommendation: production is almost half the seven-day total but about a quarter over 28 days.Over only one to three days, the HK$24,800 production charge can exceed daily vehicle hire when allocated per day.

Remember that installed graphics can last years

Printed cast vinyl with matching laminate commonly lasts 5–7 years vertically and 3–5 years horizontally. Cited 3M Wrap Film warranties reach eight years vertically and three horizontally. Unprinted, unlaminated IJ180mC has expected performance lives of ten years for white, eight for clear and six for metallic.

If the key visual remains unchanged, installed graphics can serve several events. Spread HK$24,800 over cumulative use: about HK$3,543 daily over seven days, HK$886 over 28, or HK$295 over 84 days across three years. The relevant cost depends on total days of use, not just this booking.

Unused material has a shelf life: typically two to three years unopened from manufacture or one year after opening. Do not store leftovers indefinitely for reuse. For full costs, see Mobile billboard hire costs 2026: rates and quote breakdown and Advertising vehicle hire costs in 2026 explained。

LED cost structure

LED avoids physical print production, using MP4 or JPEG files. Public hire references are commonly HK$2,500–5,500 daily, around HK$35,000 weekly (HK$5,000 a day) and HK$90,000–105,000 monthly (about HK$3,000–3,500 a day). Standard quotes generally include vehicle, driver, fuel and one return tunnel crossing, with eight consecutive driver hours and overtime around HK$200–300 an hour.

The main LED production variable is creative production. No single public rate is suitable because animation, video and still-image costs differ greatly. For short events, start with strong stills and simple transitions; invest in full video for longer campaigns or product demonstrations.

4. Flexibility: 14 days versus same-day delivery

Printed graphics: around 14 days

Allow around 14 days for artwork approval, printing, application and curing. Each stage needs working time and cannot readily be compressed.Decide on printed graphics at least two weeks before the event. Three weeks is preferable, leaving a week for revisions.

LED: potentially same-day service

The same market source states that without printing, same-day or next-day service may be possible subject to availability. This matters for last-minute events、campaigns that change their messages, and campaigns testing several creative options. LED can rotate two or three messages in a day with separate QR codes, effectively enabling street-level A/B testing.

Handling changes

Both formats require driver replanning and restriction checks for route changes, so give early notice. Content changes differ: LED requires file replacement, while printed graphics need new materials and installation labour. If messages may change, choose LED from the start.

5. Specification and cost comparison

6. Five situations and suitable choices

1: one- to three-day event → LED

Openings, launches and a single promotional weekend rarely justify spreading printing costs over so few days. LED avoids physical production. See A practical three-day store-opening plan。

2: more than three weeks of sustained visibility → printed graphics

Brand presence, extended tours and seasonal promotions spread production to around a quarter of the cited total; multi-year graphics reused across events can cost less per day. See Short- versus long-term rental value。

3: changing messages → LED

Limited offers, daily discounts, countdowns and rotating brands need changeable content, LED's distinctive strength. For seasonal scheduling, see Seasonal Promotional Vehicle Planning Schedule。

4: mainly evening activity → LED

Night markets, evening shopping areas and post-concert crowds favour illuminated screens. Printed graphics rely on surrounding light. For timing, see Routes, Timing and Coverage Strategies。

5: large product photography → printed graphics

Cars, appliances, furniture and food can benefit from high-resolution images across the whole vehicle. LED's canvas may be only a few hundred pixels wide, so print can show finer product detail over a larger area.

7. Three combined strategies

1: sustained presence plus event-day intensity

Run printed vehicles for weeks or months, then add LED on key dates for changing event messages. Use one visual system so encounters across settings reinforce the same identity.

2: divide daytime and evening roles

Use printed vehicles for daytime coverage and their large visual area, then LED in evening shopping, dining and entertainment districts. Allocate budget to each format's strength.

3: divide geographical roles

Use LED in core business and evening shopping areas for visibility, and smaller printed vehicles in neighbourhoods, estates and narrow streets for economical local contact. See Advantages of mini promotional trucks and Compare five vehicle types。

Fleet production can reduce unit costs

Where several printed vehicles are involved, public quotations indicate that fleets above ten can have graphic application costs as low as around HK$5,000 per vehicle, below single-vehicle quotes. Include these production economies in negotiations.

8. Shared regulatory limits

Physical limits for graphics and screens

Both formats fall under the Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations: do not obstruct the driver's view, mandatory lights or reflectors, or the registration number, with secure installation required. Taxi-advertising approval criteria reflect the same safety principle. LED installation is a vehicle modification; Transport Department guidance calls for manufacturer or agent advice/consent beforehand, as changes may affect warranties.

Licensing

Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap. 374) section 52A provides an advertising-vehicle permit mechanism, but current Transport Department policy issues these only for non-commercial uses. Seven valid permits existed as at 2 September 2025.Standard commercial campaigns use properly licensed goods vehicles or vans with compliant graphics or LED screens under ordinary traffic and parking rules. For details, see Twenty frequently asked questions about mobile promotional vehicles。

Audio

Both formats can carry audio, subject to Noise Control Ordinance (Cap. 400) section 5(1)(b). At any time, amplification in domestic premises or public places causing annoyance amounting to a nuisance is unlawful, including vehicle-mounted speakers. No acceptable decibel ceiling is specified.

9. Measuring results: an old figure needs context

The source of “97% recall”

Many advertising-vehicle websites cite 97% recall. It has an attributed source, but is not Hong Kong data: Transportation Advertising Council of America research reported in July 2002 in Outdoor Advertising. RYP & Becker Group also reported 97% recall versus 19% static-sign retention. A US Product Acceptance and Research beer study reported 43% static versus 94% mobile recall and 54% versus 107% sales growth.

These findings are from around 2002 in the US, with methods not publicly standardised. Hong Kong's density and attention environment differ, and there is no shared public OOH impression audit standard. The figures can inform discussion of moving advertising but should not support budgets or performance guarantees. For the full source trail, see Public case studies and the “97% recall” claim。

Useful measurement methods

Use four levels: Delivery request route logs and on-site photos/video; On-site engagement count contacts, participants, giveaways and scans; Attribution use dedicated QR codes, truck-only promotion codes or telephone numbers, matching response to time slots; Exposure estimate CPM with explicit, consistent assumptions.

LED offers one additional advantage: rotate two creatives on the same day, each with its own QR code, and compare response.Printed graphics cannot be changed this way. Testing actual response is more useful than a generic recall claim. For cross-media comparisons, see Mobile billboards versus bus, MTR lightbox, tram and taxi advertising and Mobile billboards versus fixed outdoor billboards。

10. Frequently asked questions

Are LED trucks always more effective than printed vehicles?

No. LED offers illumination, commonly at least 5,000 nits outdoors and typically 5,000–6,500, plus same-day content changes. Printed graphics cover the whole vehicle, show high-resolution product images and can last 5–7 years vertically when laminated. Duration and message changes decide: LED for three days or fewer or changing content; printed graphics for fixed messages over three weeks or more.

Which is better for a short event?

LED. One public quote totals HK$56,300 for seven days: HK$31,500 hire, HK$4,800 design and HK$20,000 print/installation. Production is about 44%, versus about 24% of a HK$103,200 28-day package. Since printing is a one-off cost regardless of duration, LED generally suits one to three days and allows same-day changes.

How long do vehicle graphics last, and can they be reused?

Printed laminated cast vinyl commonly lasts 5–7 years vertically and 3–5 horizontally. Cited 3M Wrap Film warranties reach eight and three years respectively; unprinted, unlaminated IJ180mC has expected lives of ten years for white, eight for clear and six for metallic. Horizontal surfaces receive more UV. Unchanged installed graphics can serve several events: HK$24,800 production spread over seven days is about HK$3,543 daily, over 28 days HK$886, and over 84 days HK$295. Unused material typically has a two- to three-year unopened shelf life or one year after opening.

Which format suits night-time events?

LED. Printed graphics lack self-illumination, while LED stands out against lower ambient light and usually dims to reduce glare. For context, indoor displays are 500–1,000 nits, home TVs 250–350, a common outdoor mobile minimum is 5,000, and sunlit sky brightness is around 6,500 as a reference. Residential night-time audio remains subject to Noise Control Ordinance section 5(1)(b).

Can LED content change whenever needed?

Yes, by replacing MP4 or JPEG files. Show opening information in the morning, offers in the afternoon and a countdown at night. Two creatives with separate QR codes can also run the same day for response testing. Printed graphics need replacement materials and labour, preventing such quick tests.

Is printed vehicle advertising outdated?

No. It remains strong for long campaigns, where one-off production falls to around 24% of the cited 28-day total and durable graphics can serve several events. It also suits large product images for cars, appliances, furniture and food: print covers the whole body without the LED canvas's limited pixel count.

Can we use LED and printed vehicles together?

Yes: run printed vehicles for sustained visibility and add LED on key dates; use print by day and LED at night; or use LED in core shopping areas and smaller printed vehicles in neighbourhoods. Keep branding consistent. Public fleet quotes above ten vehicles show application costs around HK$5,000 each, providing potential production savings.

When should we decide on printed graphics?

At least two weeks ahead, preferably three. Printing and installation commonly need about 14 days for artwork approval, printing, application and curing. A further week allows revisions and contingencies. LED can potentially operate the same or next day subject to vehicle availability, making it the practical choice when less than two weeks remain.

Do the two formats face different regulations?

Core limits are the same: clear driver visibility, lights, reflectors and registration number, with secure installation under the vehicle construction and maintenance regulations. LED installation additionally involves modification, requiring manufacturer or agent consultation under Transport Department guidance and potentially affecting warranties. Current section 52A permit policy covers non-commercial advertising vehicles only, with seven valid permits as at 2 September 2025. Standard commercial campaigns use properly licensed goods vehicles or vans.

What matters most when choosing?

Will the message change, and how many days will the visual be used? Changing messages favour LED. For fixed content, use LED below three days and consider print above three weeks; compare all-in totals between those points. Then refine for night-time needs, distance and product imagery. If unsure, test the message on LED before investing in printed production.
