Mobile Billboards for Food Businesses: Restaurant Traffic, Sampling and Mealtime Planning
For restaurant advertising, attractive footage matters, but the more important aim is to appear while people are deciding where to eat. Lunch, dinner, afternoon tea and late-night dining have different decision windows. Use timing, routes, sampling arrangements, staffing and offer codes to connect street visibility with measurable responses.
1. Reach diners while they are choosing
Restaurant promotion has an immediate decision window
Property, cars or financial services may involve decisions over days or months. Food choices are often made shortly before a meal. A restaurant truck campaign can offer a clear option while people are looking for lunch, arranging dinner, passing a shopping centre or heading home.
Do not spread useful service hours evenly without regard to demand. Schedule around the moments most relevant to the restaurant, within the agreed shift, travel and break arrangements.
Three roles for restaurant advertising trucks
| Role | Purpose | Measurable indicators |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Introduce the location, signature dish and meal-time offer to residents or workers | Branded searches, QR scans and social mentions |
| Prompt visits | Use a relevant time-limited offer before lunch or dinner | Offer-code redemptions and in-store rewards collected |
| On-site experience | Let people try the product or join a reward activity | Samples distributed, participants and subsequent redemptions |
Three planning principles
- Choose the meal period, then the route.Ask where the target diners are making food decisions, not simply where the largest crowd is.
- Choose the response route before designing.Use a dedicated QR code, offer code, short URL or telephone number so responses can be tracked.
- Check food requirements before ordering staff and stock.Free sampling and on-site selling are different activities; confirm the applicable conditions before the event.
2. When should different restaurants advertise?
Meal periods are decision windows, not universal fixed hours
Treat these times as a starting point. Cross-check local Google Maps Popular Times, shopping-centre activity, office schedules and your own POS data. Venue popularity is not a street-impression count.
| Restaurant type | Indicative decision window | Suggested message | More suitable vehicle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lunch sets, cha chaan teng and fast food | About 10:45am–2pm | Fast service, lunch price, location and takeaway or booking link | Mini or LED truck |
| Afternoon tea, desserts and cafés | About 2–5:30pm | One signature dessert or drink, the setting and a relevant offer | Mini vintage or mini promotional vehicle |
| Dinner restaurants, hotpot and barbecue | About 5–9pm | Signature dish, group set, reservation link and dinner offer | LED advertising truck |
| Late-night dining and bar food | About 8pm to before midnight, subject to booked hours and restrictions | Available dishes, location and a current offer | LED advertising truck |
| Family restaurants, Chinese restaurants and weekend brunch | Weekends around 10:30am–2pm and 5–8pm | Family sets, reservations and children's offers | Mini, LED or multifunctional truck |
Lunch: appear before office workers leave
The useful window can begin before 12:30, when people discuss lunch. Around office districts, 10:45am–noon may be valuable. Show one set or signature benefit, a walking-distance or landmark cue, and a lunch-specific code.
Avoid displaying the entire menu. Passing diners need one clear reason to consider the restaurant, not ten sets to study on the pavement.
Dinner: offer a reason to eat out
Dinner competes with takeaway, supermarkets and cooking at home as well as other restaurants. Show a signature dish, a two-person or group set, booking availability and relevant hours rather than relying only on price.
Dinner promotion can suit an LED advertising truck. Illuminated content is visible in the evening, but output should reduce to avoid glare. Published outdoor specifications commonly cite 5,000–6,500 nits for daytime capability; confirm the actual screen and brightness control.
Afternoon tea and cafés: show the setting as well as the food
People may want a break, a photograph or time with friends rather than a full meal. One distinctive dessert, drink or interior image can work better than discount-only messaging. A lifestyle brand might consider a Mini vintage van; for flexible neighbourhood routes, consider a Mini promotional truck。
3. Choosing a vehicle for food and beverage campaigns
Neighbourhood restaurants: mini promotional truck
Local restaurants, snack shops, cha chaan teng and mixed lifestyle/food businesses may serve a catchment of only two or three kilometres. Relevant estate, market and side-street routes can matter more than citywide coverage.
PEAKVEIN's Mini promotional truck offers solar power and Wi-Fi, with Maximum load up to 1,000 kg for samples, insulated equipment, gifts and registration materials. Confirm combined load, volume, power and food-handling requirements.
Chains and evening dining: LED screen truck
LED suits cooking footage, changing daily offers and evening visibility in appropriate commercial areas. MP4 or JPEG content can switch from lunch sets to afternoon tea and dinner offers during the day, subject to update and operating terms.
Example screens include sides around 2.4m high × 5.76m wide, rears around 2.4m × 2.24m, and a 2.24m × 3.52m screen at 560 × 880 pixels.560 × 880 pixels is smaller than a typical phone screenshot, so food imagery, prices, text and QR codes must remain clear and simple.
Sampling, displays and registration: multifunctional promotional truck
New-product sampling, pop-ups and food events needing display space may suit a Mobile showroom truck, providing an authorised setting for interaction rather than only driving past.
A public retail example is The Body Shop's mobile mini-store, with racks, trial space and checkout equipment. RoadAds took it through Causeway Bay, Central and Mong Kok and made short residential-area visits. Its combination of commercial visibility and local trial can inform food campaigns, with separate food and venue requirements checked.
Performances and larger events: stage truck
Food festivals, shopping-centre events, collaborations and openings involving a host, performances or games may use a Mobile stage truck. Check licensing first: public performances, concerts or film screenings may require a Temporary Places of Public Entertainment Licence from FEHD. Relevant submission deadlines are at least 42 days with temporary structures or 18 days without, subject to classification and exemptions.
Quick vehicle comparison
| Requirement | More suitable vehicle | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Stores near estates, older neighbourhoods or narrow streets | Mini promotional truck | Compact access and stock capacity for authorised local activities |
| Dinner, late-night offers or video content | LED advertising truck | Illuminated display with digital content changes |
| Food/drink trials, displays and registration | Mobile showroom truck | Display and interaction space |
| Food festivals, performances and opening ceremonies | Stage truck + LED | A stage for the event, with LED vehicles directing relevant audiences nearby |
| Speciality coffee, desserts and lifestyle events | Mini vintage vehicle or T2 | A distinctive setting and photo appeal |
For the full selection framework, see Choosing a mobile advertising vehicle: comparison of five vehicle types and LED advertising trucks versus mini promotional trucks。
4. Food rules: distinguish sampling, preparation and sales
Free samples, reheating, cooking and selling are different activities
Do not assume a small free sample needs no preparation or approval. Requirements depend on handling, reheating, cooking, sales and the venue. Confirm the actual plan with FEHD and the site manager before booking the activity.
Temporary Food Factory Licence
FEHD guidance states that temporary stalls or kiosks at public events selling reheated pre-cooked food, or cooking prepared ready-to-cook food for consumption off the premises, must obtain a Temporary Food Factory Licence before operation.
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Licence validity | No more than seven days |
| Licence fee | HK$220 |
| Application form | FEHB 201A / FEHB 201B |
| Food source | Only pre-cooked or prepared ready-to-cook food supplied by a licensed food factory or another lawful source, within the licence conditions |
| Fuel and cooking restrictions | Unless separately approved by the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, use electricity for permitted reheating or cooking with the required facilities. Do not assume deep-frying, stir-frying, grilling or other methods producing substantial oily fumes are allowed. |
Food licensing can be the longest planning constraint.A three-day event still needs advance coordination of licence, venue, stock and staff.
Shopping centres, estates and private venues have additional rules
A food licence does not grant venue access. Obtain written owner or management permission and check insurance, cleaning, waste, power, handling, access-hour and stall requirements.
Do not treat the roadside as a sampling venue
The Road Users' Code prohibits stopping, including for loading/unloading, at locations such as active no-stopping zones, bus/minibus stops, taxi stands, tunnel/control areas, expressways and crossings.
Arrange sampling at authorised store premises, shopping centres, private or event venues, or approved government land. A busy street does not automatically permit an extended stop. For route restrictions, see Mobile advertising truck routes, timing and coverage strategy。
5. Food artwork: more than an enlarged menu
Four elements for an LED frame
- One signature product: Choose a main dish rather than showing ten.
- One meal-time reason: For example, a lunch set, dinner for two or a late-night offer.
- A location cue: Store name plus a landmark or walking distance, rather than a long address.
- One response route: A QR code, offer code, reservation link or takeaway page.
Viewers may glance for only two or three seconds. Adding ten dishes, six discounts and four QR codes to a good food photo can make the entire message hard to remember.
Lunch, dinner and late-night copy should differ
| Meal period | What the diner wants now | Message direction |
|---|---|---|
| Lunch | Speed, proximity and value | Lunch set, serving speed and walking distance |
| Afternoon tea | A break, photo appeal and an offer | A signature dessert, drink or inviting setting |
| Dinner | A reason to gather, good food and a reservation | Signature dish, group set and booking link |
| Late-night dining | Current availability, location and atmosphere | Opening hours, available dishes and a current offer |
Using QR codes for restaurants
Separate links by purpose rather than relying on one generic code:
- Lunch code: Lunch sets or office-group ordering page
- Dinner code: Reservation or two-person/group-set page
- Sampling code: An on-site reward, membership signup or next-visit voucher
- Takeaway code: The brand's ordering page or a specified platform listing
This separates responses by content and phase. Compare with route timing while allowing for delayed scans, shared codes and other influences.
6. Routes: start with people the restaurant can serve
Three zones around the store
| Zone | Area | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Within walking distance of the store | Include in each suitable loop, with more passes before the meal period |
| Secondary | Nearby estates, offices, markets and shopping-centre approaches | Include on alternate loops to cover everyday journeys |
| Connecting zone | Roads connecting relevant locations | Use for transfers without unnecessary stops |
A distant busy area may produce little value if diners cannot conveniently reach the restaurant. Unless a chain network or delivery area serves them, prioritise the actual local catchment.
Dense neighbourhoods offer compact route potential
Cited Census and Statistics Department figures put Hong Kong at about 7,000 people per km² and Kowloon at about 47,557, with 30.1% of residents on 4.24% of the land. District densities include Kwun Tong 59,704, Sham Shui Po 46,067, Yau Tsim Mong 44,458, Wong Tai Sin 43,730 and Kowloon City 40,994.
A short route can therefore pass through a substantial residential catchment, though density does not itself measure impressions or customers. Some older streets and estate approaches favour compact vehicles, subject to access and permission. For the full data, see our campaign guide to all 18 districts。
New Territories restaurants should target town centres, not whole districts
Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, North and Tai Po have substantial populations spread across large areas. Yuen Long spans 138.56km² at about 4,825 people per km²; North is around 2,269 and Tai Po 2,325. Focus on relevant town centres, MTR stations, shopping centres and estate clusters.
Meal-time route restrictions
Evening demand can overlap stopping restrictions. Green-post hours on some roads include 5–7pm, so vehicles may circulate but cannot stop there during that period. Sampling and distribution need a separately authorised location.
7. Budget beyond vehicle hire
Basic formula
Total = (daily hire × days) + content production + staff + sampling stock + venue/licence costs + overtime and contingency.
Staff, food stock and licences are common omissions. Hire is only one component.
A three-day restaurant campaign example
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| LED hire | 3 days × an assumed HK$4,000/day midpoint | About HK$12,000 |
| Vehicle graphics | No new printed wrap in this short-campaign example | HK$0 |
| Peak-period staff | One event day: supervisor plus two promoters and one assistant on five-hour hourly shifts | About HK$3,550 |
| Overtime contingency | 2 hours × an assumed HK$250 | About HK$500 |
| Content and sampling stock | Depends on the brand's supplied materials and activity | Separate schedule |
| Base subtotal | Excludes unpriced content, stock, venue/licence costs and other extras | From about HK$16,050 |
This is a worked example, not a PEAKVEIN quote. Staffing above covers one event day, not all three; extra days require additional budget. Actual prices depend on vehicle, dates, route, hours, venue and content. For the calculation method, see Advertising truck costs: a budget formula。
Why a new wrap can be poor value for three days
The cited HK$4,800 design plus HK$20,000 printing/installation totals HK$24,800, or about HK$8,267 a day over three days, above the cited HK$2,500–5,500 LED hire range. For short restaurant promotions, LED may leave more budget for samples, staff and trackable offers.
Staff do not necessarily need a full-day shift
Reference rates are HK$800/day for a supervisor, HK$200/hour for a promoter and HK$150/hour for an assistant. One supervisor, two promoters and one assistant cost HK$5,200 over eight hours. Keeping the supervisor at HK$800 and using five-hour shifts for the hourly roles gives HK$3,550.That saves about 32% in the example, subject to minimum shifts, breaks and operational needs.
8. Measure more than the crowd size
Four levels of restaurant campaign data
- Execution: Route logs, actual times, stationary durations and on-site photos/videos.
- On-site activity: Samples, vouchers distributed, scans and registrations.
- Attribution: Separate lunch, dinner and sampling codes to record reservations and redemptions.
- Business outcomes: POS sales, reservations, takeaway orders, membership signups and branded searches, compared with equivalent earlier weekdays and other relevant influences.
An example offer-code structure
| Channel or time slot | Example code | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Lunchtime LED campaign | LUNCHPV | Lunch offer redemptions |
| Dinner LED campaign | DINNERPV | Dinner-set redemptions or reservations |
| Sampling activity | TASTEPV | Subsequent visits or membership signups |
| Social media | IGPV | Compare online responses with vehicle-campaign responses |
Do not base the plan on “97% recall”
The frequently repeated figure is attributed to US Transportation Advertising Council of America research around 2002, not current Hong Kong data. Hong Kong has no shared public industry audit standard for OOH impressions. For a restaurant, offer redemptions, reservations, visits, takeaway orders and memberships are more actionable measures than an old recall percentage.
For the source discussion, see Measuring Mobile Billboard Results: Public Cases and the Source of the 97% Recall Claim。
9. Five common food-campaign mistakes
Mistake 1: spreading activity evenly instead of targeting meal decisions
Lunch restaurants should prioritise pre-lunch and lunchtime; dinner venues should consider the commute and pre-dinner period. Schedule around the restaurant's actual demand rather than filling every hour identically.
Mistake 2: showing the entire menu on LED
A canvas may be only 560 × 880 pixels, with two or three seconds of attention. Too many dishes, prices and QR codes compete rather than communicate.
Mistake 3: assuming food alone is enough to run a sampling event
Food sales, reheating and cooking at public events can involve licensing, source, fuel and cooking-method restrictions. The venue may impose additional conditions.Confirm the activity before buying stock.
Mistake 4: offering only a discount
A promotion may prompt a first visit, while the signature dish and experience give people a reason to return. Pair one immediate incentive with a clear product benefit.
Mistake 5: leaving no follow-up after a sample
Samples alone show distribution volume. A suitable QR activity, offer code, membership reward or next-visit voucher helps record later responses and informs the next campaign.
10. Frequently asked questions for restaurants
Can advertising trucks help a restaurant?
They may help when the route and timing match diners' decisions. Align activity with lunch, dinner, afternoon tea or late-night demand, and track offers, reservations or takeaway links. A local catchment of around two or three kilometres may be more relevant than broad coverage. Results depend on the offer, access, execution and audience; use measured responses to decide whether to expand.
What time should a restaurant advertise?
Starting points are 10:45am–2pm for lunch, 2–5:30pm for afternoon tea or cafés, 5–9pm for dinner, and evening to before midnight for late-night venues. Check the booked service window, local restrictions, POS data and customer habits. Google Maps Popular Times can provide context, but is not an impression count.
Should a restaurant choose LED or a mini vehicle?
Mini vehicles may suit older neighbourhoods, estates and narrow streets, subject to access and permission. PEAKVEIN's mini truck has up to 1,000kg payload, solar power and Wi-Fi for stock and registration. LED suits video, changing offers and evening commercial-area visibility. A multifunctional truck can provide trial and display space. Confirm the actual power, load and food requirements.
Does restaurant sampling require a licence?
Confirm the exact activity and handling method with FEHD. Temporary stalls at public events selling reheated pre-cooked food or cooking prepared ready-to-cook food for off-premises consumption require a Temporary Food Factory Licence. The cited validity is up to seven days, fee HK$220 and forms FEHB 201A/201B; check current details. Food must come from lawful sources and cooking must follow the licence conditions. Unless separately approved, electricity is used for permitted handling and methods producing substantial oily fumes, such as deep-frying, stir-frying or grilling, are not allowed. Free samples and venue-specific rules still need confirmation.
Should a three-day restaurant campaign use a new wrap?
LED is often more practical. HK$4,800 design plus HK$20,000 printing/installation totals HK$24,800, or HK$8,267 a day over three days, above the cited HK$2,500–5,500 LED hire range. Digital files can change without physical printing, though creative/update fees may apply. Print may suit longer use or an unchanged design that remains fitted across agreed bookings, with condition and retention costs checked.
What should restaurant LED artwork include?
One signature product, one meal-time reason, a location cue and one response route. Lunch could show a set, price, landmark and lunch code; dinner could show a dish, two-person set and booking link. Avoid a full menu: the fitted canvas may be only 560 × 880 pixels and viewers may glance for two or three seconds.
How much should restaurant event staff cost?
Published references are about HK$800/day for a supervisor, HK$150/hour for an assistant, HK$200/hour for a promoter and HK$400/hour upwards for a model. One supervisor, two promoters and one assistant cost HK$5,200 for eight hours. Keeping the supervisor at HK$800 and reducing hourly roles to five hours gives HK$3,550, subject to minimum shifts. Budget this per staffed day and align shifts with meal decisions.
Can the truck stop outside the restaurant to distribute samples?
Only at a location where the stop and activity are authorised. Public-road restrictions cover active no-stopping zones, bus/minibus stops, taxi stands, expressways, tunnel/control areas and crossings. Arrange stationary sampling at authorised store premises, shopping centres, private/event venues or approved land, with food and venue requirements met.
How can I measure restaurant customers responding to the truck?
Use separate codes such as LUNCH, DINNER and TASTE, linking to the relevant set, reservation, takeaway or membership page. Record scans, redemptions, bookings and POS activity separately, then compare with route times and suitable baselines. Allow for shared codes, delayed actions and other promotions; tracking does not prove every sale was incremental. Require route logs and on-site photos as delivery evidence.
What happens in rain or a typhoon?
Some operators continue in ordinary rain, Amber Rain or Signal No. 3 subject to safe conditions. Suspension arrangements for Signal No. 8 or above, Black Rain or government-declared extreme conditions should follow current Labour Department guidance. Outdoor sampling and staff may need to stop earlier if local conditions are unsafe. Agree suspension triggers, make-up hours and whether unused time can be refunded or moved to another relevant date; these are contractual terms, not automatic entitlements.
